Eco-Cycle’s 3rd Annual Zero Waste Business Awards Luncheon

Look for this image at local businesses that are recycling, composting, or going all the way to Zero Waste with Eco-Cycle. On March 8, Eco-Cycle gathered more than 100 of its business and community partners from Boulder and Broomfield Counties for an awards luncheon, highlighting the efforts of six businesses that made an exceptional commitment to working toward Zero Waste in 2006. The event was hosted by the Boulder Outlook Hotel & Suites—Boulder’s first Zero Waste hotel.

Boulder Outlook Hotel & Suites, Boulder's first Zero Waste hotel, won the Going for Zero Waste...or darn near! award for small businesses. Three years ago, Eco-Cycle introduced its Zero Waste Services, a comprehensive program that is helping businesses reduce the amount of trash they create, conserve resources, and keep waste out of landfills through recycling, composting and environmentally-friendly purchasing choices. Through this distinctive, full-service program, businesses are keeping 70% or more of the waste they produce out of landfills.

A panel of community judges chose this year’s award winners based on the following criteria:

  • Weight and volume of material diverted through recycling, composting and Zero Waste purchasing;
  • Education and outreach used to communicate Zero Waste goal with employees and the community;
  • Use of innovative collection systems;
  • Type and quantity of hard-to-recycle materials collected, such as electronics, pallets and stretch wrap;
  • Implementation of additional sustainability programs and practices.
